Google Confirmed a Spam Update. Not a Core Update.
Google confirmed one ranking update in August, and it was a spam update. The August algorithm update being sold as a recovery project has no confirmed ranking event behind it.
Google’s Search Status Dashboard records the August 2026 spam update beginning on 18 August 2026, with a duration of two days and sixteen hours. That is the confirmed ranking event, and it is the whole of it.
The rest of the story comes apart on the same dashboard. Between the June 2026 spam update, recorded as beginning 24 June with a duration of two days and one hour, and the release on 18 August, the dashboard lists no ranking incident at all. Crawling and Indexing report no recent incidents. The two most recent entries under Serving are dated 24 February 2026 and 3 October 2025. That is a record of what Google reports, not proof that nothing moved. It does mean the early August window that recovery guides are written against carries no confirmed ranking event. The most recent core update remains May 2026, beginning 21 May with a duration of eleven days and twenty-one hours. Spam and core updates are separate categories on Google’s own dashboard.
Our math: price a remediation project aimed at no confirmed event. A site earning 20,000 organic sessions a month at 2% conversion and a $180 CAD average order turns over $72,000 CAD. A retainer at $4,000 CAD a month is $12,000 CAD of actual spend across a quarter. Now assume, and this is an assumption rather than a rule, that pruning and template consolidation depress traffic 15% for those three months before any lift. That is 9,000 sessions, 180 orders and $32,400 CAD of modelled lost revenue. The $12,000 CAD leaves the account. The $32,400 CAD never arrives. Only one of them appears on an invoice.
Our read: separate the surfaces before concluding anything. AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Web search type in Search Console, while Discover is reported separately. A number moving is not a diagnosis, and a recovery plan that cannot name a dated event is not a plan.
What did Google confirm in August 2026? One ranking update, a spam update, recorded as beginning 18 August with a duration of two days and sixteen hours. No core update, and no confirmed ranking incident anywhere in early August.
