AI Max Is Rolling Into Standard Shopping With a 5% Lift Claim. You Will Never See It in Your Own Data.

Google began rolling AI Max into Standard Shopping campaigns on 24 July, bringing AI query matching, ad text generated from your feed, and landing page optimisation to the campaign type that has always given advertisers the most manual control.

Existing bidding and targeting stay in place. Ad copy is built from Merchant Center attributes such as materials, fit and durability. Google can also choose between serving a Shopping ad or a text ad depending on the query, and Final URL Expansion can be switched off if you want traffic going only to Shopping ads. Merchant Center gained three Gemini-powered additions the same day: AI Summary Insights, Search Suggestions and persistent chat history.

Google reports an average 5 per cent conversion increase at similar cost per acquisition or return on ad spend. On the Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings call, Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler cited 15 per cent for accounts using AI Max or Performance Max, with more than 500,000 advertisers adopted. Those are two different claims with two different scopes, both measured in-platform, neither independently audited.

The math, on why the number is invisible: in a campaign producing 300 conversions a month, a 5 per cent lift is 15 conversions. Normal month-to-month variation in a 300-conversion account is roughly plus or minus 17 conversions before anything changes at all. That is pure counting noise, before seasonality, creative fatigue or a competitor raising bids. The claimed lift sits underneath the noise floor.

Our read: turn it on. The feature is sound and the controls are reasonable. Then stop trying to prove the lift and start protecting the downside, because the inputs are the part you own. Ad copy generated from your feed is only as good as your feed. Landing pages selected by the system are only as good as the pages it can reach. Audit the feed and exclude the pages you never wanted a shopper to see, then read performance at account level over a quarter rather than campaign level over a fortnight. The 31 August Local Inventory Ads change moves the baseline again, so any before-and-after built this month is already compromised.

A platform reporting a lift from its own feature, measured by its own systems, is marketing. It might also be true. Neither of those makes it evidence, and telling the difference is the job.
