Google's New Ad Terms Let Its AI Build Your Campaigns. You Still Own the Outcome.

On 1 July 2026, Google rewrote the Google Ads Terms of Service for the first time in roughly eight years. It applied to every account automatically. No login prompt, no checkbox, no action required.

One clause does the work. Advertisers now authorise Google to use automated features to format, select, or generate targets, ads, and destinations by default. Artificial intelligence (AI) building more of your campaign is no longer a setting you switch on. It is the baseline.

The part that matters for owners: the liability did not move. Google's terms still put the responsibility to review, approve, edit, or remove campaigns and assets, including the ones its AI generates, squarely on you.

You can narrow the scope at campaign level. Final URL Expansion and Automatically Created Assets can be switched off. The account-level authorisation stands regardless.

Our read: this is a governance change, not a feature. You are now accountable, by default, for decisions a system makes in your name. Convenience went up. So did your exposure. The owners who stay safe put a review layer over what the platform automates and keep an independent record of what it is doing, rather than trusting the system that generated the work to also grade it.

A pipeline audit starts by showing you what your automated campaigns are producing, and where you have lost control of them.
